Your hard drive is the largest contributor to speed and performance of your computer, and this is where you will notice the largest improvement from an upgrade.

Hard drives on all computers are rated by spindle speed and the buffer size. Spindle speed is how fast the internal motor spins, and is relevant to how fast the drive can read and write data. This directly translates into how long is takes for programs to load, the computer to start, and more.

Your laptop probably came standard with a 4200 RPM drive. Hard drive sizes range from 10 GB to 120 GB, and speeds up to 7200 RPM.

Your laptop from the factory came with a lot of extra programs that are neither used, nor have any real benefit. System manufacturers put these on as part of their agreements with software companies to try to get you to buy their products.

Deleting unused programs and taking non-essential applications out of the startup menu can dramatically increase the speed of your computer - both on startup and during use.

System optimization is a series of steps to "clean up" your computer. This is done in things like in depth disk defragmentation, increasing the size of your master file table, bios updates and deleting or turning off non-essential applications.
